Thirty-plus years later, he and his wife Elaine are still faithfully serving customers and their community in Camp Springs, MD. Their sons have grown up and moved away, and Nashville became their second son Chris’ home, and music his livelihood.

Chris started performing at youth camps and writing songs which were picked up by the likes of Michael W. Smith, Amy Grant, Kathy Troccoli, and John Tesh. His skill as a lyricist prompted Rocketown Records to sign him as their first artist in 1996. Musical abilities instilled by his mother were revealed a year later when Chis released his debut album.

Now, a Dove award and 1.6 million units later, his sixth studio project, What a Heart is Beating For releases July 17 on INO/eb+flo/Columbia Records (Provident-Integrity).

Despite his son’s success, Mike says, “I can’t give a Chris Rice album away.” His Jesus Bookstore demographics have changed and now serves a predominantly African-American market. Mark says music sells very well at his store, but most of it is gospel. He adds the key to successful music sales: “Listen to your customers. They ask for what they want.”

Chris has also learned what his audience wants. After the success of top-10 mainstream love song “When Did You Fall,” he told me he’s been “set free to explore ideas in writing and topics that reach a much broader spectrum.” Chris is not writing songs that cross over to the general market only for the money. He has strong beliefs about Christians being light to the world and not just unto themselves. At the risk of being misunderstood, Chris Rice is using his skills and talents to get his music out into the world.

Mike faced many misunderstandings when he set out to follow the Lord’s calling to start a store. He had no previous retail knowledge and even got shot down by his pastor. “I kept asking ‘How do you do this?’ and praying ‘Lord, I’m willing. Teach me,’” Mike says. “Once we stepped out in faith, the Lord blessed it from get-go.”

Mike and Elaine Rice may have wanted to pass on the store that’s been such a blessing to them. Mike allowed and encouraged his sons to work there when they were younger. He even offered ownership to Chris, but after completing his agreed-upon service, he said, “Dad, the Lord called you into the book business. Not me.”

Mike gives his sons blessing in the unique ways they’ve each been led by God. “He gives us the gifts and talents we need to do the job He requires,” Mike says. “Chris made a good choice.”

Founding Avalon member to step down at year-end

After nearly 12 years with Avalon, founding member Jody McBrayer plans to depart the award-winning vocal group due to a heart condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Here is what blew my mind - in All of Africa, $7 gives clean water to 7 Africans for a year. In Kibera Kenya, $7 gives 3 meals in a day for 9 orphans. In Bulawayo Zimbabwe, $7 would put two kids in school for a term. It's those kind of things that made me realize this is something I can do.

So I've felt convicted to move from the talking to doing category. Epics such as The Ten Commandments, The Greatest Story Ever Told, and The King of Kings came out of the 1950s and ’60s.

As pop culture shifted and values-based films began to fall out of favor with studio executives, exploitive and profane content seeped into movies to the point of saturation. Many Christians would no longer risk a trip to the theater as most films stirred up offense.

When The Passion of The Christ grossed $612 million theatrically in 2004, Hollywood started to take notice and court a previously discarded Christian audience.

In a rebirth of sorts, the number of movie studios now seeking to cater to the Christian market is increasing.

Big-money backing from companies such as 20th Century Fox, Motive Entertainment, and Walden Media have helped make the development and marketing of quality family-friendly films a priority. Here’s a sampling of recent entertainment offerings.

Opening in theaters Feb. 23, 2007, Walden Media’s Amazing Grace stars Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four) as William Wilberforce, the man who championed the abolition of slavery in the British Empire.
The soundtrack, Music Inspired By the Motion Picture Amazing Grace (Sparrow/EMI CMG), features modern day versions of period hymns by top Christian, gospel, and country artists. It releases Jan. 23, 2007 to both the general market and CBA-member stores.

Charlotte’s Web, a new version of the E.B. White-authored children’s classic, is another major-motion picture backed by Walden Media, also behind the success of
Because of Winn-Dixie and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The film, which hit theaters last month, stars Dakota Fanning as Fern, the young farm girl who adopts a poor little piglet she calls Wilbur. Voices in the live-action/computer-animated feature include big names such as Julia Roberts, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Buscemi, and Reba McEntire.
While not entirely evangelical in nature, the film caters to Christian values, likely to become a family favorite. The movie’s soundtrack features songs by Hawk Nelson, Amy Grant, and Billy Ray Cyrus, plus exclusive tracks by Bob Carlisle, Leigh Nash, and more.

While the aforementioned films illustrate a movie’s success with large pockets for production and marketing, Facing the Giants proved that low budget, independently produced faith movies can compete at the box office. This inspirational sports film was funded by $100,000 in donations from Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, GA. Grossing more than $8 million since its Sept. 29, 2006 theatrical release, the film is poised to continue performing upon its Jan. 30 DVD debut.

The Nativity Story’s $65 million budget made it the most expensive religion-themed movie in history to come out of a major studio. The film made $8 million in theaters its opening weekend.

One Night with the King, a lower budget ($20 million) Biblical epic that follows young Hadassah, an ordinary Jewish girl destined to become Esther, Queen Of Persia, grossed more than $13 million during its limited theatrical release as part of 20th Century Fox’s new Fox Faith initiative. The DVD debuts Feb. 6 from Word Distribution.

Groundbreaking film The Passion of the Christ was one of the biggest box office sellers of all time, and the original DVD sold more than 15 million units. Now, The Passion: The Definitive Edition (Word) includes behind-the-scenes documentary, deleted scenes, and more. The two DVD-set streets Feb. 6.

Paul Lauer’s Motive Entertainment, which designed and executed the highly successful marketing campaigns for The Passion of the Christ and grass-roots outreach campaigns for The Polar Express and The Chronicles of Narnia, also promoted the Dec. 22 theatrical release of Rocky Balboa.

The film starring Sylvester Stallone is reportedly the final installment of the Academy Award-winning “Rocky” series. The PG-rated movie follows former heavyweight champion Rocky Balboa as he steps out of retirement and back into the ring, pitting himself against a new rival in a different era.
During marketing efforts leading up to the film’s release Stallone traveled nationwide explaining that he felt compelled to write the first film, and he believes that drive came from God. He said the character of Rocky was meant to reflect the characteristic nature of Jesus. Stallone confessed his own life didn’t follow the humble example of the boxer who made him a Hollywood star. But, Stallone said he’s been going through a change in his life and turned to Christ, allowing him to write the final chapter of the epic series.

Thr3e, another film under the Fox Faith umbrella, releases to more than 500 screens Jan. 5, 2007. Based on Ted Dekker’s best-selling novel, the PG-13 thriller follows a young seminary student targeted by a psychopathic killer. Specific locations and theater information are available at FoxFaithMovies.com. Word Distribution will release the DVD in March.

Now The Weinstein Co. (TWC) is following in FoxFaith’s footsteps, forming a faith-based film distribution label and making a multiyear deal with Christian production company Impact Entertainment to produce and acquire theatrical and direct-to-DVD content. TWC has the first option to release movies that Impact chooses to develop.

The first two theatrical projects to go into development adaptations of The Penny (FaithWords) by Joyce Meyer and Deborah Bedford and The Christmas Candle (Westbow/Nelson) by Max Lucado. Execs said the goal is eventually to release six theatrical titles per year. ”This is a rapidly emerging and important area in the entertainment industry, and this deal fits perfectly into our strategy of acquiring and producing films that target niche audiences,” said TWC's Bob Weinstein.

Israel & New Breed top GRAMMY nominations.

Integrity Gospel recording artist Israel & New Breed received the most nominations from among the Gospel/Christian artists nominated for The Recording Academy’s 49th Annual GRAMMY Awards. Artist worshipers and renowned speakers Louie Giglio, John Piper, and Beth Moore, among others, are scheduled to lead the gathering.

Since 1997 Passion has sought to foster unity and connectivity among local churches and campus ministries, resulting in a louder anthem of God’s renown. With more than 1.5 million CDs sold, the Passion movement has delivered some of the biggest songs in the church today and helped launch Chris Tomlin and David Crowder Band’s careers.

Sixstepsrecords’ ninth Passion project, Passion: Everything Glorious (EMI CMG), released Apr. 4, 2006 and became an immediate best seller. The album claimed the No. 1 position on the SoundScan Christian retail sales chart and landed at No. 69 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.

“I’m thrilled with the sales success of Passion: Everything Glorious, and for our retail partners who resonate with Passion and its vision to reach college campuses for God,” says David Crace, EMI CMG Label Group, Marketing Sr. VP. “This music is extremely relevant to college kids, but also resonates with anyone who enjoys modern worship music. ”

Passion is expecting even bigger things in the future. Now they’re becoming established enough to start celebrating their past. Passion has put together the definitive collection of songs from the movement over the last 10 years. Best of Passion, a two-CD compilation, is set to release Dec. 26.

This comes on the heels of the sixsteps’ Sept. 26 release of See the Morning, the newest release from 2006 GMA Artist and Male Vocalist of the year, Chris Tomlin; and on the same day as Matt Redman’s (also a 2006 Dove-award winner) newest, Beautiful News.

Bebo Norman's Between the Dreaming and the Coming True

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Singer/songwriter Bebo Norman now adds producer to his list of accomplishments. Norman co-wrote and produced Between the Dreaming and the Coming True primarily with Jason Ingram (The Longing), with “The Way We Mend” produced by Glenn Rosenstein. While Norman used to write all his own songs, he told me the collaboration allows him to place more priority on family, friends, and his wife. Proclaiming a newfound confidence, Norman says this album is a turning point for him as an artist. Norman’s loyal fan following will experience his personable and conversational stage presence as he tours the next few months with Brandon Heath (Reunion/Provident-Integrity) and Aaron Shust (Brash/Word). Check out Bebo's web site for dates. (That's tour dates, silly--he's married now, remember?)

ABOUT THE ALBUM
Two years after Try, Norman’s fifth studio album Between the Dreaming and the Coming True hit stores Sept. 19. Inspired by Robert Benson’s same-titled book about finding God in the midst of depression, “It was so poignant to me because this really is where life as a believer is most often lived… somewhere between the two. It’s about hope eternal played out against the backdrop of a difficult world. It’s messy and it’s beautiful all at the same time.”

ABOUT THE SONGS
“Into the Day,” reflective of the entire album, is about stepping out of darkness into hope. “Be My Covering” displays a rousing chorus calling out to God. “Time Takes Its Toll on Us” is a prayer written to God (“I need to see you in the sunrise”) and a rally around relationships in which beauty and tragedy intermingle. “I Know Now” uses surges of strings and brass to propel the message that burdens can be laid down. “I Will Lift My Eyes” uplifts “the Maker of the mountains I can’t climb…Calmer of the oceans raging wild…Healer of the hurt I hold inside.” “To Find My Way to You,” with its upbeat tempo and sweet message, strikes a bittersweet chord with lyrics about loving long-distance. “Sunday,” a simple and sunny love song, provides a stark contrast to the final song. “Now That You’re Gone” is a cry for those wounded by loneliness and loss. The least hopeful of all the tracks, it draws listeners back to the beginning of an overall triumphant album.

Amy Grant on The View.

After receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and releasing Time Again (Word/Curb/Warner) last week, Amy Grant will appear on ABC’s The View Tuesday, Oct. 10.
